California Led Nation in Wind Installations Last Year
The Wind Energy Association says that California led the way for new wind turbine installations in 2011, adding 921 megawatts of capacity to the grid with 328 new installations. California ranks third for wind power under construction with 441 new turbines on the way that promise to add 847 megawatts to the grid. Read more here.
Car Makers Support Proposed New Clean Car Rules
Automakers have voiced their support for California's proposed rules to require more electric and other less-polluting hybrid cars and trucks on the roads by 2025. Ford Motor Corp., Chrysler Group LLC, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and others submitted testimony in support of new emissions standards expected to be approved by the California Air Resources Board. Read more here.
California Venture Capitalist: Clean Car Rules Create Jobs
Palo Alto-based venture capitalist Marty Lagod writes in the Los Angeles Daily News that
California's advanced vehicle standards help to support jobs and grow California's economy. He urges the adoption of new clean car rules, saying California’s leadership is critical to helping shape global policies. Lagod writes, “We incubate great ideas here, bring them to market, and then -- most crucially -- lock in our leadership position so we keep the jobs those ideas create in California." The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Orange County’s Great Park as the site for the 2013 Solar Decathlon, a unique opportunity to showcase energy-efficient housing and clean energy technologies that was hosted on the National Mall in Washington D.C. last year. The Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design and build solar-powered houses. Visitors will be able to tour the renewable energy houses that combine energy-efficient construction and appliances at a specially-constructed Great Park Solar Village in the fall of 2013. Retailers Race to Install Electric Vehicle Chargers
Retailers in California and nationwide are installing electric vehicle charging stations in their parking lots to entice customers as the sale of electric cars rises. Drugstore chain Walgreen Co. is installing chargers at about 800 stores nationwide, including about 100 in the Los Angeles Area; Macy's, Inc. is installing chargers at a handful of department stores in San Diego; Kohl's Corp. plans to equip 33 stores nationwide with charging stations; and Best Buy said it will test charging stations at 12 locations including San Diego and Los Angeles. Sonoma County to Power Seven of Its Facilities with 100 Percent Renewable Sources
Sonoma County has announced plans to power seven of its facilities with 100 percent renewable sources, including wind and biomass, in an effort to save money and cut its energy use. The county has entered a one-year agreement with 3 Phases Renewables of Manhattan Beach to purchase wind and biomass electricity to power facilities in Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Read more here.
